Vertical Transmission of HIV Campaign Plan
ADPR 5110: Advertising, Public Relations, and Health is an interdisciplinary course designed to introduce students to communication practices within the health industry. Through lectures, group projects, and presentations, students explore topics like health promotion, risk communication, patient advocacy, and the use of emerging technologies in healthcare communication. The course enhances students' ability to develop strategic campaigns for health organizations, expanding their expertise into the growing fields of health advertising and public relations.
Our research project, titled "Vertical Transmission of HIV in Newborns," focused on addressing the ongoing challenges faced by children born with HIV in the United States, particularly in Central and South Florida. Although vertical transmission rates have declined due to medical advancements, many affected children still face significant stigma, lack of education about their condition, and difficulties with disclosure. Using health communication theories like the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior, we designed a comprehensive campaign to educate children and families, encourage open discussions, reduce stigma, and promote early HIV testing and awareness. Our strategies included partnerships with healthcare organizations, the development of out-of-home advertising, community testing events, influencer-led social media outreach, and advocacy for improved sex education in schools.
